As a reader and owner, we have all had that talk amongst our close mates on what car we would aspire to build as a project car. A major aspect of that conversation is – what would be your dream car to work on and where would you begin if you were starting with a blank canvas? Well today, we have the privilege at Street-Cover to feature Benji’s S13.5, a very comprehensive story and build.

Benji commenced with a bare shell that was missing a motor, gearbox, interior and doors. He set an objective to create a budget track car that he could get up and running for $5,000. After working closely with his mate who was wrecking his car, Benji found a RB20DET, R32 gearbox and a R32 cross member. Like any other project, the build went overtime and he invested in a full body kit, widened guards with the car rolling on beautiful Work XT7’s. It was a tidy package and the car ended up throwing out 240kw from a high mount turbo.

After 7 months from completion of the build, Benji took it to the track and disaster struck “ the infamous Silvia caught on fire.

A year flew by and Benji rebuilt the Silvia with a twin cam RB30, and completed a 32 GTR Rear-Wheel Drive Conversion with gearbox. Disaster struck again, with Cylinder 1 failing, resulting in punching a rod out of the block after two race meets.

As Benji struck bad luck twice, he contemplated whether to withdraw from the project overall and part ways with his beloved S13.5.

Three years on and hoping the third time being lucky; through blood, sweat and heart-aching tears, the infamous 13.5 still lives on with a very comprehensive build and immaculate attention to detail (refer below for the specifications).

As illustrated, Benji’s tenacity to rebuild his beloved S13.5 track car has been very admirable. Even through numerous setbacks and heartaches, he has managed to pursue his goal in creating the perfect track car.

Looking from a different perspective, it has given Benji the opportunity to start with a different canvas over the years. As we have witnessed all over the world through forums and build articles, projects flourish and grow stronger from milestones and also mistakes.

That is perhaps, what makes Benji’s S13.5 build a special one to remember. Despite the numerous trials and tribulations throughout the build, his vision, his goals remained clear and focused and thus we have a masterpiece in the making.
